Car Insurance Rates for Different Types of Drivers
Since not every driver is the same, we also collected data based on different ages & driving histories below.
Different car insurance rates based on driving history:
Driving History Full Coverage Cost
Clean driving record $737/year
One recent at-fault crash $1,278/year
DUI $1,529/year
Drivers of different ages with a clean driving history looking for car insurance can expect to find these minimum rates:
Driver’s Age Full Coverage Cost
20 year olds $1,660/year
30 year olds $787/year
40 year olds $737/year
50 year olds $703/year
65 year olds $597/year
As you can see, prices tend to come down as drivers get more experience on the road. To cut down on costs, young drivers might want to consider buying only state-mandated coverage, rather than full coverage insurance. The other major cause for higher rates is a DUI or recent accident, so as a reminder, drive safely!

Data & Rate Estimate Methodology
For our “good driver” profile, InsureBetter used auto insurance quotes from an average of 10 insurers in each state for single male and female drivers with no tickets, violations, or accidents.
For full coverage policies, we used the following coverage limits:
  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person.
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident.
  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident.
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist coverage per person.
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist coverage per accident.
  • Collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible.
  • Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible.
We used a 2019 Honda Accord for all drivers and assumed 10,000 miles driven per year.
For minimum coverage estimates, we used the minimum insurance required by each state.
For rate estimates with one at-fault crash, we used an at-fault crash that happened 9 months ago, resulting in $13,000 in property damage and no bodily injury claim.
For rate estimates for drivers with a DUI, we used a single drunk driving violation that happened 9 months ago.
